“Slumber Party” by Alvita Lozano and Eric Peoples

On February 14, 2012, several local artists displayed their work for Fall In Love With Fashion, an innovative pop up experience, curated by Alvita Lozano. While I wasn’t able to take pictures of everything, here are a few of the pieces I was able to catch at the event, hosted at Salon Rehe. Also, Fall In Love With Fashion was able to raise $695 for FernCare, a local free clinic.

“Young Hearts” an audiovisual narration by Invisible Twins (Mario and Rose Suau)

“Illusion Collection” by Joey Merchant

“Cake Box” an assemblage of found objects and designer box handbags by Elizabeth Kincaid

“Vita’s Favorite Dessert” an assemblage of found objects and designer doll shoes by Dorinda Balanecki

“Vincenzo” a screen print on glass with mixed media and triptych by Brian Larson and Jacob Lewkow

“Untitled” a design digital print by Mark Sarmel

“Queen” an experimental mixed media garment (and my hands down favorite piece of the show) by Tiffany Best

COMPLEX 1 Year Anniversary Celebration: February 29, 2012

Hats Against Hunger Featuring Mr. Song Millinery: February 23, 2012

ERollins Fashion Preview Casting Call - February 18, 2012

Theater in Detroit: Love, Loss and What I Wore Starting February 8, 2012

Love, Loss and What I Wore, an intimate collection of stories by Nora Ephron and Delia Ephron is based on the best-selling book by Ilene Beckerman, as well as the recollections of the Ephrons’ friends. The production opened in October 2009 at New York’s Westside Theater and is now showing at the Gem Theater, in Detroit, February 8th through March 4th, 2012.

Love, Loss and What I Wore, uses clothing and accessories and the memories they trigger to tell funny and often poignant stories that all women can relate to. Directed by Karen Carpenter, the production is performed by a rotating cast of five all star actors. The Detroit cast includes Emily Dorsch, Daisy Eagan, Sonia Manzano, Loretta Swit and Myra Lucretia Taylor.

WALK Fashion Show, one of the Midwest’s largest fashion event, is back for Spring 2012. This season, Ford Model Bianca Golden from America’s Next Top Model Cycles 9 and 17 will host the WALK model casting, where over 500 hopefuls are expected, ready to rip the runway. Golden, best known for ANTM and multiple appearances on the Tyra Banks show, hopes to inspire local Detroit women in the fashion industry. Golden is excited to share the knowledge and experience she’s gained from her successful modeling career since ANTM with Detroit’s fashionistas. Golden is now signed with Ford Models in Chicago, Major Model Management in New York, Fusion Model Management in South Africa, and Click Models in Boston. Golden appeared on the Project Runway Season Five Finale and has graced the pages of Essence Magazine, Cosmopolitan, The Source and various other publications. WALK is not Golden’s first involvement in runway shows - she has taken part in multiple fashion weeks and numerous BET Rip The Runway shows.

The WALK casting will be held on Saturday, February 4 from 1pm to 5pm at the 4731 Gallery, located at 4731 Grand River in Detroit, MI. WALK is casting male and female models between the ages of 16-35. All sizes and ethnicities are welcomed. Models should bring a head shot photo or comp card and female models should wear stiletto heels.

Each year, WALK, now in its 5th edition, has averaged over 500 women at each casting call and over 2,000 fashion show attendees from the metro Detroit area and around the country. Each year, WALK donates a portion of its proceeds to various charities. This season’s show is produced by native Detroiters Crystal Bailey, award winning event producer KeKe Dillard and Daishawn Franklin, who was recently featured in the Detroit Free Press, celebrating nine years of successful celebrity event and concert production around metro Detroit.

WALK strives to provide a platform for locally based designers, store owners and the Detroit fashion community. The Spring WALK Fashion Show will take place in May 2012, at the Detroit Opera House.

Detroit is brimming with creative talent, as evidenced by jewelry designers, Nava Wiegert and Brianna Kenyon, the design duo behind Suum. Detroit Style Review recently interviewed Wiegert, who proved to be just as intriguing as the pieces she creates.

DSR: What’s the meaning behind the name Suum?

NW: “One day a few years ago, Brianna and I lined up our micro metal components in robotic army fashion on the dining table of a close friend, Robert McAdow. Always intrigued by his psychological mind, we asked him what they meant to him. Without hesitation, ‘The whole is greater than the sum of its parts. It’s Gestalt. More correctly, the whole is other than the sum of its parts.’”

“I later nested into a piece of paper and pulled some words out of that wine fueled discussion, in the inspired mood to finally name our art of parts, a task previously daunting. I chose the word “sum” for manipulation. To it I added a ‘u’ because that’s what you do to find a sum, add, which made the new word both greater than and other than its original self. Inserting the ‘u’also signified the physical addition of U/You to our work as a crucial, physical component of its wholeness. On my paper: Suum. It looked intriguing and made sense, at least to me, its creator. Proud of it, I grabbed Google, which instantly informed me I was not suum’s creator! Suum is ancient, Latin, and means his, her, its own. It is reflective possessive, unisex, individual, ironically perfect. Even more, paired with another curious looking word, suum cuique means to each his or her own. So, it’s a made up word that isn’t a made up word that fits with precision as Suum Sums do!”

DSR: How did the two of you develop the “concept” behind Suum?

NW: “Obeying inborn curiosity and for the goodness sake of jewelry’s evolution, we broke a few rules and parts landed in our laps. There was something beautiful about each individual part, but when it formed an alliance with others, it transcended its individual beauty. Acquiring purpose, each trusted the next, until as a unit, they politely asked us to join them for completion. They pleaded with us to keep the fixing torch away, assuring us we were all they needed to hold. So, to answer your question, I don’t believe we designed the concept as much as we discovered something that invited us to work with it, something too gripping to not give it a voice.”

“As humans, Brianna and I enjoyed the experience of this discovery. As designers, we chose to offer this natural reward of discovery to the conSuumer. It would have been inhumane to solder those parts together.”

DSR: How did the two of you become partners?

NW: “We were friends first, partners second, friends still. We met in a subterranean studio in Ann Arbor, seated beside one another in the wax room, both designers for jeweler, Matthew Hoffman. Initially toiling in anonymity creating inert works (I, led by my right hand, she, by her left), we soon realized we shared an artistic ambition to snub stubborn tradition. Merging minds and putting our strong hands together, we conceived a new understanding of the accessory, a mutual devotion to challenge a perpetually ancient premise: to be no mere ballast, but an integrated instrument of design. What began as a restless curiosity soon evolved into an alloy of vision that eclipsed a mere summing of its parts.”

DSR: What are the pros and cons of being Detroit based designers?

NW: “Detroit can turn and mill metal on one foot with its eyes closed. It’s a natural manufacturing home for Suum. Michigan has produced such precision product for us that Suum Sums have been compared to German engineering at its finest by several of the industry’s most respected, discerning eyes. ‘aSUUMe not,’ we two girls with the muscle of Detroit say with a proud smile!”

“Also, an inspirational gem for our industrial aesthetic, Detroit is so far the only diamond we have set in our work. Its folks gleam with brilliance too and push us forward with their strengths, like Simone DeSousa of Re:View Contemporary who breathes art and discovers talent that rivals the nation’s best. Story sharing, supportive bloggers such as yourself are also a great gift of Detroit for its artists and their progressive work needing a vessel. Thank you!”

DSR: How would you best describe the Suum customer?

NW: “Man and woman drawn to any of the following: the unusual, the unexpected, modern art, architecture, metaphor, mechanics, construction, precision engineering, partnership, teamwork, story, discovery, American innovation, conscious evolution.”

“Equally, the man and woman repelled or bored by any of the following: ‘jewel’ry, dusty notions, assumptions, stiff forms, rules.”

DSR: What sets Suum apart from other jewelry brands?

NW: “Thesaurus.com suggests these synonyms for the word ‘accessory,’ which well-describe the product of the others: additions, adornments, attachments, bells and whistles, decorations, doodads, embellishments, extras, frills, ornaments, trimmings. Such words do not describe Suum Sums because our chosen definition of an accessory isn’t a passive put-on. Instead, it is an assistant, accomplice, co-conspirator, cooperator, helper, partner in crime. We are separated from the others by pure, twenty-four carat definition. Contrasting to the industry’s traditional use of the human form as a hanger for handsome things, Suum integrates both mind and body into form and function. Suum Sums are wearable architecture that require the human form to build, support, and embody. More than metal, they are the experience of acquired function and multi-faceted beauty when beings and design concept work together. Ornaments be damned!”

DSR: Where do you hope to see Suum in the next five years?

For fifteen years Jimmy Choos have graced the feet of royalty, celebrities and well heeled fashionistas the world over. To commemorate the brand’s fifteenth anniversary, Jimmy Choo will release a coffee table book entitled, Jimmy Choo XV, on February 14, 2012, published by Rizzoli.

Written by Founder and former Chief Creative Officer Tamara Mellon, Jimmy Choo XV chronicles the fifteen most significant shoes from the company’s archives and reflects on what has made them hallmarks of the brand.

The book is divided into eight chapters, each focusing on the signature design and recognizable themes that have helped to define the brand, complete with lush imagery shot by photographers including Terry Richardson, fashion magazine editorials, red carpet shots and behind the scenes photography.

If you’re a Jimmy Choo brand enthusiast or just enjoy looking at beautiful shoes, add this book to your fashion library list.

Fashion In Detroit is back for its 3rd annual show, where national and local fashion designers will showcase their Fall/Winter 2012 collections. This year’s event will once again include Market Detroit, an interactive pop-up shop retail environment showcasing local vendors and designers. A portion of the proceeds from Fashion In Detroit will go to this year’s charity partner Ronald McDonald House of Detroit and Ann Arbor. For more information or to purchase tickets go to www.fashionindetroit.com.

The ladies of FASH DET have organized a thrift (and vintage) crawl for January 28, 2012. If you’re available you really should go because these ladies are serious thrifters - I’ve seen firsthand their eye for quality pieces at bargain prices. Go, meet new people, pick up some great pieces, all while support local businesses.

My friend, stylist and fellow blogger Alvita Lozano has curated Fall In Love With Fashion - an event which brings together two of her loves - fashion and art. She came up with the idea to curate a fashion themed art event years ago, following a visit to an Ann Arbor art gallery. After a recent photo shoot she styled, themed, “Fall In Love With Fashion,” Lozano decided to marry the two to create this event.

Featuring a wide range of artistic talents, Lozano’s mission is to combine 1/3 fashion culture themes, 1/3 social responsibility and 1/3 business. Lozano’s plans are to curate a fashion and art event annually.

Appropriately slated on Valentine’s Day, Fall In Love With Fashion promises to be an exciting event. In the spirit of full disclosure, I’m putting together a window display for the event, which I’m super excited about, so if you’re in the area, I hope you’ll join us.

Detroit Snob founder Desiree Cooper; Photo by JMillz, FreshCoolDope

I met Detroit Snob founder Desiree Cooper at an entrepreneur seminar. What caught my attention was the t-shirt she was wearing - understated and black with the words, “detroit snob” across the front. It was minimalist and chic, yet attention grabbing. Detroit Style Review caught up with Desiree Cooper recently to find out more about Detroit Snob.

DSR: Tell me about Detroit Snob and what prompted you to launch the brand?

DS: “I first came across the term while doing interviews for my blog about three years ago. While it immediately resonated with me, it took me awhile to realize that this was very descriptive of how so many Detroiters feel about their hometown.”

“It applies to the new creative class that is now pouring into Detroit, as well as to the people who have been here for decades, trying to make the city a better place for everyone. It applies to the young and the old. With the media always wanting to tell the story of our decline and how we’re a symbol of racial strife and urban decay, at heart, we are a city of snobs—people who get each other, and aren’t concerned with who else gets us.”

“It was clear to me that the time was ripe to give Detroiters something to rally around—a way to show their dogged pride. Detroit Snob is not just a slogan or a fashion statement— it’s also a mentality, it’s a community, it’s a way of life.”

DSR: What is a Detroit Snob?

DS: “First of all, a Detroit Snob doesn’t have to be someone from Detroit. I’ve had people buy the shirt from Maryland to Los Angeles. A Detroit Snob is anyone who has an affinity for the city and is willing to work for its bright future. A Detroit Snob is high-minded, but always down-to-earth. A Detroit Snob offers action, not excuses. A Detroit Snob is a serial optimist. A Detroit Snob finds art where others find refuse. A Detroit Snob plants green where others see gray. A Detroit Snob never offers apologies, only possibilities.”

DSR: It seems that part of your brand’s message is to highlight Detroit’s positives. What are some of the things you wish others knew about Detroit?

DS: “Detroit residents give a higher percentage of their income to charity and religious organizations than residents in most other cities. Detroit’s theater district is second only to Broadway. Belle Isle is the largest city island park. It’s bigger than Central Park and was designed by the same architect, Frederick Law Olmstead. Lafayette Park has the world’s largest number of buildings designed by famed German architect Mies van der Rohe. It remains one of the finest examples of urban renewal, with its mixed-income and mixed living options. Do I need to go on?”

DSR: What are your future plans for Detroit Snob?

DS: “My partner—veteran public relations specialist Pat Williams Taitt Euseary—and I have a definite vision for the company which includes new designs and expansion to other kinds of apparel. However, we are open to the organic way that the company is evolving. Over the 2011 holidays, a senior citizen lost her home in a fire. Detroit Snobs came to her aid, donating clothing within the first 24 hours. It was amazing to see what an active network the Detroit Snob has become. It’s not just a slogan—it’s a way of life.”

DSR: Where can one purchase Detroit Snob products?

DS: “Of course, the tees are available online at www.detroitsnob.com. They are also available at the following metro Detroit locations:

DSR: Is there anything else you’d like to add?

DS: “We invite you to get on board with Detroit Snob. You can find us on Facebook. You’ll see that people are posting their photos of themselves being active all over in their tees. It’s also a great place to talk about what’s happening around town and how to get involved.

Thanks to my friend and fellow blogger Alvita Lozano, vintage shopping at the Rust Belt Market has become one of my new weekend hobbies and guilty pleasures. I went to the Rust Belt Market when it first opened over a year ago, and I have to admit, it was quite overwhelming, so I hadn’t been back, until recently. What once had a little bit of everything going on has settled into a nice vintage shopping destination, with multiple vendors, all under one roof. Here’s the 411 on a few of my favorites:

Kelli’s Vintage

Kelli, owner of Kelli’s Vintage, started selling vintage over 7 years ago online, but now sells exclusively at the Rust Belt Market. “I started collecting and selling vintage because I love clothes and wanted a home business. I also noticed a lot of the new styles were copying off the old styles,” said Kelli. Kelli’s Vintage acquires it merchandise from multiple sources.

Dolly Rocker’s

Owner Cara Nova Lundgren has been working in vintage stores ever since she was 13 years old, so opening her own vintage store was a natural progression since she’s always been around it. Although she closed her Dolly Rocker’s storefront on Woodward a few years ago, Cara continues to sell her vintage merchandise at the Rust Belt Market and through her Etsy store.

Resurrected Vintage

Wardrobe stylist and Resurrected Vintage owner Lisa Patterson has been selling vintage for 19 years. She started out with her mother at antique shows, selling vintage to other dealers. For 10 years she had her own store front in the historic Old Town District in Saginaw, but has now settled into her space at the Rust Belt Market, in addition to selling through her Etsy store. Lisa specializes in what she likes to refer to as “wearable vintage,” – pieces that her customers can wear today, without looking dated. “When I select pieces, I have a type of person/customer in mind,” said Lisa. “If I can’t visualize a specific customer or how he or she can wear it, I don’t buy it. I usually know the right customer when they [sic] come to me.” Lisa acquires her merchandise through estate sales, thrift stores and from other dealers. Lisa uses a lot of her merchandise in film, television and print production then resells it once she’s done.

The Rust Belt Market, located at 22801 Woodward in Ferndale, MI, is open on Saturdays and Sundays from 11am-7pm.

The Italian Renaissance produced many influential and interesting characters, but probably none more fascinating than Countess Caterina Riario Sforza De’Medici. The illegitimate child of the then Duke of Milan, Countess Caterina was raised in great privilege, side by side with her father’s legitimate children. “She was this contemporary person. She fought battles and even owned her own breast plate,” said author Elizabeth Lev, in a recent interview. “She was well educated and had excellent taste, but she was also an actor – when things weren’t happening fast enough she got up and got things done. She had a tremendous physical education. She learned to ride and hunt with her brothers.” Married off at ten years old, Countess Caterina would mother six children, wed three husbands and become the Countess of Forli and Imola.

Even in the fifteenth century, Milan was known for its high fashion, in which Countess Caterina greatly indulged. “She wore clothes that turned everybody’s heads. She wore brilliant colors, she had jewels set into her clothes, she knew how to dress to impress. Despite all her motherhood concerns and all of her political concerns, she was always very, very interested in her appearance. Style and the impression you can make with how you look was very important to her,” said Lev.

A natural born, non-conformist, Countess Caterina was every bit the fashion rebel, risk taker and rule breaker. “Throughout Italy, at various points, there were sumptuary laws which dictated how long your train could be, how many rings you could wear on your hand, what materials you could use. In Florence and Rome, for modesty’s sake, women were to wear a transparent kerchief to cover their shoulders and the tops of their breasts. Caterina never did any of that. When she was younger she wore very low cut gowns,” said Lev. “At seven months pregnant, Countess Caterina took the Fort of Rome and held it hostage until she got what she wanted. When she had given up the castle, she walked out in a simple brown traveling dress, brown was the color of mourning, with a sword and a money belt around her waist, which was unheard of because that’s [the sword and money belt] what a man would wear; only men did that.”

Despite her love for fashion and style, Countess Caterina was quick to remind her detractors that there was more to her than met the eye. “Whenever anyone began to question or talk down to her, her response would always be, ‘You talk to me like this because you look at me and you think that I’m a woman, but you forget that I can think like a man,’ and that’s what made her such an exciting figure for the fifteen hundreds.”

Author Elizabeth Lev will be at St. Regis Parish on Wednesday, January 11th at 7pm to discuss her book, The Tigress of Forli. St. Regis Parish is located at 3695 Lincoln Rd.
